2006 Jeanneau 42DS

Accommodations

Conceived by naval architect Marc Lombard and styled by Vittorio Garroni, the interior architecture of the Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 42DS maximizes natural light, ambient space, and functional offshore ergonomics. The Deck Saloon design raises the coachroof profile to accommodate signature cat’s-eye wrap-around panoramic windows, drawing sunlight into the living spaces and providing panoramic horizon views from the companionway and salon seating.

Schmitten features the two-cabin, two-head Owner’s layout, dedicating the hull volume aft of the companionway to an expansive master stateroom rather than dividing the stern into cramped charter quarters. The interior joinery is finished in satin-varnished marine Alpi teak, offset by warm wood trim and low-maintenance composite teak-and-holly sole boards that show well, earning an eight-to-nine out of ten rating.

Entering through the low-angle companionway, the salon provides an open-concept living area with a continuous 6' 5" vertical headroom. To starboard, an expansive U-shaped dinette surrounds a finely varnished dining table. The dinette mechanism lowers to convert into an expansive double berth, allowing the vessel to accommodate six passengers overnight. Directly opposite to port is a full-length settee sofa that functions as a lounging area at anchor or a secure sea berth underway.

Aft of the port sofa is the dedicated navigation station, featuring a forward-facing chart table with internal storage, a 12V DC master circuit-breaker panel, 110V shore power selectors, and vessel monitoring instrumentation.

The aft master stateroom utilizes the full 13' 7" beam, providing an island king berth rarely found in forty-two-foot cruising yachts. This suite includes twin nightstands, built-in clothing wardrobes, reading lamps, deep under-berth storage, and overhead opening hatches providing cross-ventilation into the cockpit.

The private en suite master head compartment features an electric-flush marine toilet installed in 2024, a vanity with a molded basin and designer fixtures, mirrored storage lockers, and a Shower (Wet head). Additional 110V electrical outlets were wired into the master suite in 2024 to support personal electronics and appliances.

The forward guest stateroom provides a private retreat for guests, featuring a centerline double V-berth, hanging wardrobe, overhead storage shelves, and an opening Lewmar deck hatch replaced in 2026 for improved ventilation and light. The forward cabin includes direct private access to the forward head compartment, which is equipped with a marine toilet, stainless steel wash basin, pull-out shower assembly, and an electric drainage sump pump.

Multi-zone climate control is provided by two Webasto FCF reverse-cycle air conditioning and heating units installed new in 2024: a 12,000 BTU unit serving the salon and forward stateroom, and a dedicated 5,000 BTU unit conditioning the master stateroom.

Galley

Positioned to starboard at the companionway base, the L-shaped offshore galley provides secure bracing in heavy seas while maintaining continuous interaction with the main salon and cockpit companionway. The workspace features durable, light-toned countertops bordered by deep solid-wood fiddles that serve as handholds underway.

Food storage is anchored by a large dual-access 12V DC marine refrigeration system featuring both top-loading and front-opening access, accompanied by a dedicated deep-freeze compartment. Cooking appliances include an ENO two-burner gimbaled marine propane stove and oven with integrated potholders and a stainless steel crash bar.

A deep double-basin stainless steel sink is recessed into the counter, serviced by a designer mixer faucet installed in 2024.

Pressurized domestic freshwater is distributed by a heavy-duty 12V Shurflo pump operating at 3.4 gallons per minute, tied to an inline accumulator tank that delivers consistent pressure across all galley and head fixtures. Water heating is handled by a 6-gallon marine water heater replaced in 2024, utilizing both an internal 110V AC heating element for dockside use and an engine-assisted heat exchanger loop for hot water while motoring.

Offshore freshwater self-sufficiency is established by a reverse-osmosis desalination watermaker installed new in 2024, eliminating reliance on marina water supplies during extended island crossings and extended coastal passages.

Electrical Systems

Schmitten is engineered as a self-sustaining cruising vessel, utilizing modern lithium storage and high-output solar generation that removes the fuel burn, maintenance demands, and exhaust noise associated with an auxiliary marine diesel generator.

The direct-current storage network features a 400 Amp-hour Renogy Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) house battery bank installed in February 2024 ($4,000 investment) within secured, vented battery enclosures. Compared to standard AGM installations, this lithium chemistry supports deep discharge cycles with minimal voltage drop, easily supporting refrigeration, lighting, navigation instruments, and the watermaker.

Battery charging at anchor is managed by a 1,000-Watt bifacial solar array mounted on a custom-welded stainless steel transom arch installed in 2025. The bifacial panels capture direct overhead sunlight as well as albedo reflections from the water surface, generating high daily amp-hour yields. Power generation and consumption are monitored through a Bluetooth-enabled Renogy smart shunt that delivers real-time battery status, state of charge, and net amperage data directly to mobile devices.

Alternating current is supplied through a Renogy 1,000-Watt pure sine wave inverter, providing power for personal electronics, entertainment gear, and small galley appliances away from the dock. For marina stays, the vessel incorporates a 110V AC shore power system served by dual 30-Amp shore power connections and an automatic 40-Amp marine battery charger protected by a main breaker distribution panel.

One 30-Amp is solely for the air conditioners and the remainder of the boat is self sufficient while at dock. Mechanical selector switch is utilized for the solar to shore power switching on the house power.

Engine cranking is isolated to a separate heavy-duty 12V marine starting battery.

Sails, Rigging and Deck Hardware

The vessel utilizes an anodized aluminum double-spreader mast and boom assembly manufactured by Seldén Mast, fitted with an in-mast roller-furling mainsail system that permits all sail deployment and reefing operations from the cockpit.

The standing rigging underwent significant improvements under the supervision of Rick Zern of Zern Rigging. Following a crossing where the original forestay experienced wire deformation (bird-caging), a new forestay was fabricated and installed in 2024 with a specialized three-way swivel assembly to eliminate furling friction and prevent line wrapping.

Comprehensive professional standing rigging surveys were conducted in March 2025 and August 2026, confirming the mast, turnbuckles, spreaders, and swages are in good working order.

Deck, Canvas and Ground Tackle

The deck layout balances open cockpit entertaining with secure footing underway. Dual 316 stainless steel steering pedestals open up a central walkway through the cockpit, providing unobstructed movement from the companionway to the stern sugar-scoop swim platform.

A central cockpit table incorporates folding leaves for outdoor dining, internal drop-in storage. At the stern, the integrated swim transom includes a stainless steel folding ladder and a pressurized hot-and-cold freshwater shower for rinsing off after swimming.

Weather protection is anchored by a Sunbrella dodger fitted with heavy-gauge clear Strataglass forward and side panels, stainless steel support struts, and a roll-up center window for light air ventilation. The Sunbrella cockpit bimini, installed new in 2026, which shields the helm stations and companionway from the sun, is scheduled for brand-new replacement prior to final closing and transfer of title ($1,500 contracted value).

Following an incident where an overhanging tree limb contacted the vessel during a boat yard move, all affected stanchions were replaced, and the lifelines were converted to uncovered 316 stainless steel wire for improved durability.

Ground tackle is suited for offshore anchoring, centered around a 65 lb Mantus primary storm anchor purchased in 2024 ($1,400 investment), connected to 250 feet of 3/8" high-tensile galvanized chain ($1,550 investment) marked for depth reference. A secondary anchoring system comprises a lightweight 45 lb Fortress aluminum fluke anchor fitted with a 50-foot chain lead and 100 feet of nylon rode.

Chain retrieval and deployment are handled by a 12V Quick/Lewmar electric anchor windlass housed inside the deep foredeck locker, operated via foredeck foot switches and helm controls.

Safety Gear and Emergency Equipment

Schmitten carries dedicated safety and emergency gear configured for offshore coastal cruising and open-water passages.

Hull, Keel and Underwater Running Gear

The hull shares its naval architecture with the Sun Odyssey 42i, featuring an efficient Marc Lombard hull form characterized by a fine forward entry, moderate midship deadrise, and a broad transom that delivers downwind stability and interior volume.

The vessel features the 5' 2" (1.60 m) shoal draft keel, consisting of a cast iron fin with an integrated hydrodynamic bulb. This configuration delivers the stability of a ~6,100 lb ballast package while drawing under five and a half feet, facilitating access to shallow waters across the Bahamas, Florida Keys, and Intracoastal Waterway.

The hull laminate is solid hand-laid fiberglass reinforced with vinylester resin in outer plies for blister defense, backed by a structural grid bonded to the hull to disperse mast step and keel loads. Marine surveys and owner history confirm the yacht has no history of osmotic blistering.

The underwater profile received a complete bottom paint application in January 2026, followed by professional diver hull cleaning every three weeks while stationed in warm waters. Sacrificial zinc anodes on the propeller shaft and hull were replaced in August 2026 to ensure ongoing galvanic corrosion protection.

Propulsion is delivered via a 30mm stainless steel straight shaft passing through a dripless mechanical seal, supported by an external cast bronze P-bracket strut turning a three-blade bronze propeller.
